Former United States Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher offers a "prescription" for optimal health: Physical activity at least five times a week for at least thirty minutes; Good nutrition; Avoid toxins beginning with tobacco; and If you are sexually active, then engage in responsible sexual behavior.

Now what's the difference between exercise, physical activity and physical fitness?

- Exercise is defined as "planned, structured and repetitive bodily movement done to improve or maintain one or more components of physical fitness." The benefits of exercise include: increased energy levels; boosted immune system; chronic disease prevention and management; reduced stress, anxiety and depression; and improved body composition and image.

- Physical Activity is "bodily movement that is produced by the contraction of skeletal muscle and that substantially increases energy expenditure, both occupational and non-occupational."

- Physical Fitness is "the ability of the body to adapt to the demands of physical effort and effectively engage in physical activities." The five components to physical fitness are Cardiorespiratory Endurance, Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, Flexibility and Body Composition.

No exercise plan can replace the advice from your primary care physician or health care provider. Please be attentive to what your doctor advices for exercise and physical activity. The men's workout on drmikeweaver.com is a personal routine. The women's workout is designed for those ladies who are currently fit and looking to tone muscle. Tremendous results have been seen from both workouts. Credit must be given where it is due. Former bodybuilder Tony Dunn provided the majority of the workout. The workout was tweaked after a discussion with former Mr. Olympian Lee Haney (particularly the bicep routine and pictured to left). So, kudos to Tony and Lee for adding to the routine. Being an avid runner, the weekly seven-mile run was thrown in for a good cardiovascular workout.
